One of the first things I wanted to do upon joining Colette & Lola was update the designs of the birthday cakes that we had on offer.
Why I didn’t like birthday cakes
Everyone has a birthday. Some people love celebrating it and some people don’t. Ever since I hit the age of 30, I haven’t particularly liked celebrating my own birthdays. To me, it was a constant reminder that I was getting older. I would always notice another white hair on my head or I would spot another wrinkle on my face.
But since last year, I’ve managed to change my perspective on birthdays.
An uncle that was very dear to me had recently passed away.
I remembered the last thing I said to him was that he was my favorite uncle ever since I was a kid. His frail hand grabbed my own and he said “I appreciate you telling me that”. And that was the last time that I saw him alive.
As I journeyed back to Jakarta, I realized that I had never before, in my 36 years of being alive, told him that he was my favorite uncle. Only when he was on his death bed did I say something.
I wish I had told him this years ago and every year after that.
I wish I still had the opportunity to do so.
Now, I have no more chances to tell him that.
A New Perspective
So my perspective of birthdays has changed since that moment. Rather than seeing it as becoming a year older, I now see birthdays as:
- Another opportunity to tell my parents that I love them
- Another opportunity to make an impact on someone else’s life
- Another year to make some fantastic memories and stories
The New Birthday Cakes
So our updated birthday cakes are an homage to celebrating opportunities and taking them.
In my last blog post, I stressed the importance of my mission: To bring the fun back and creating new memories when giving or receiving a delicious and beautiful cake.
We have some exciting new and playful birthday cakes.
Every single one of them brought my big goofy smile back.
Every one of them a new memory.
Every one of them to share with you, my dear cake lover.
